About Tobi's Tales
Hi, I'm Tobi. I've been playing D&D for over six years now, most of that time as the Dungeon Master. What grabs me most about it is the community: that we dive into worlds and stories together and create something as a group that wouldn't exist without all of us. Over time, more and more people sat down at my table who had never played before, and I noticed where the hurdle tends to be for them: someone is keen to try D&D, opens the rulebook, and gives up somewhere around the third table of numbers. The Player's Handbook is 300-plus pages, after all, which is a lot to wade through just to build a single character.
So I started building characters for new players or walking them through creation, until one day I thought: what if they just filled out a little form, and I built the character from that? Things escalated a bit, and now here we are. That's exactly what the Character Builder does automatically today. Instead of fighting your way through rules text, you answer a few simple questions: how should your character feel, how do you like to fight, who even is this person? The app pulls together the rules, stats, and options in the background. At the end you're holding a finished, playable level-1 sheet, without having to chew through a rulebook first. And the best part: you can even level your character up to level 5 afterwards.
It also mattered to me that the character sheet actually works at the table. So I split it into three zones: dice and statistics on the left, everything combat-related in the middle, and the remaining skills on the right. It doesn't stray far from the classic sheet, but those few small changes, especially to the size and prominence of the values that matter most, help you find what you constantly need more quickly during play.
I build all of this on my own and with fairly high standards, which have already cost me the odd night's sleep because I couldn't pull myself away. What drives me is making sure D&D doesn't fall apart at the very first hurdle. That's why, alongside the builder, there's the Glossarium that explains the English game terms in a beginner-friendly way. Tobi's Tales stays free to use; I cover webspace and running costs myself. If you enjoy the project and want to chip in, I'm happy about a coffee on Ko-fi. It's never required. If you have feedback, an idea to share, or you're looking for a session for newcomers, I'd love to hear from you.

Tobi's Tales CompanionBeta
The Companion has three modes. In Tutorial Mode you get to know your character sheet: what the fields mean and how you use them at the table. In Digital Sheet you use that same sheet virtually, with dice right in the browser. In Practice mode you play through situations from a real table.
New: Practice. Three play situations where the GM describes, you decide and your character rolls. There is no wrong choice, only paths you haven't tried yet.
The Companion is still in beta: it is growing, and not everything is finished. If something looks off, tell us. That is exactly why it is already open.
